TRACEY - Queechy HS and Waverley PS
TRACEY - BRINGING HOPE TO YOUNG PEOPLE
My name is Tracey and I am the school chaplain at two schools in Launceston – Waverley Primary and Queechy High. Previously I worked as a psycho-social support worker with a case load of 30 adult and adolescent clients who lived with a consistent mental health diagnosis. I am a mother of five and as I work with the students, I want to care for them as I hope my children would be cared for by another adult when I am not there.
I work with students in their classrooms who are having challenges with their learning. This one-on-one approach helps build trust with these students who often also struggle socially and emotionally. The freedom to move to classrooms where teachers have requested my help for students who are disruptive or non-productive has been rewarding as these students are spending less time in isolation and more time in the classroom getting their tasks done.
During lunchtimes, I sit with students in the playground, playing games and chatting. I am grateful for how trusted I have become to the student body, especially some of the senior girls, who will seek me out to chat about what is going on in their lives.
As a chaplain, I am able to be separate from the educational aspect of school and available for the social, emotional and spiritual needs of each student. I am Jesus-centred in my approach, encouraging love and respect and seeking to show each member of the school community that they are unique, worthwhile, valued humans.
The work of chaplaincy will only continue with the support of the community and generous Tasmanians. Your gift will help support my work and school chaplaincy into the future!
