JO - BRINGING HOPE AT INVERMAY PRIMARY
My name is Jo, and I am the Chaplain at Invermay Primary School. I worked for the Education Department in the 1980s as an early childhood teacher. I left teaching to start my family and be at home with my children. Volunteer work at Scripture Union camps and church ministries opened the door to a chaplaincy role.
I work with individuals in the classroom supporting them in their learning. I also maintain a presence in the playground with a games table. I am developing a school garden with interested children, further making myself available in the playground for sharing and relationship building. We have a twice weekly breakfast program for 60 children. Through all these activities, I build relationships that children perceive as safe and secure, where they can express themselves without conflict or negativity. I make time to listen, help and nurture confidence so that every individual knows they are a worthy community member. Chaplaincy provides security to the insecure, friendship to the lonely, a listening ear to the concerned and encouragement to the disheartened.
The work of chaplaincy will only continue with the support of the community and generous Tasmanians. Your gift will help support my work and school chaplaincy into the future!
