CHARLIE - BRINGING HOPE TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN ULVERSTONE
My name is Charlie and I am the chaplain at Ulverstone Primary School and Ulverstone Secondary College. I really enjoy getting alongside young people, encouraging them and sharing the love that I’ve been shown. I don’t aim to be religious; my goal is to live out an authentic faith. Why? Because Jesus was real and relational with the people around him. I aim to be that person.
I belong to an incredible school community at Ulverstone Primary School. I spend a lot of time in small groups or one-to-one, empowering young people to do their best.
I challenge the thought that says, “I cannot”. The tool I use for this is teaching people the game of chess. Over time, I see students going beyond their self-doubt as they
learn to think critically, learn how to accept defeat gracefully, and aim high in their
personal endeavours. Chess is a practical example of what I aim to achieve in the lives of UPS students.
I recall the pressure of being a young person with fears and anxieties. If I can be a friend, mentor, and chaplain that can leave a deposit of hope within the heart of a student, then I feel like I have done my job. As somebody that has worked in many spheres of society, I can confidently say that the role of chaplain is essential in the life journey for young people.
The aim of SU Tas is to give hope to young people through activities such as school chaplaincy, yet this work will only continue with the support of the community and generous Tasmanians. Your gift will help support my work and school chaplaincy into the future!
